How Much Does WhatsApp Messaging Cost for Shopify Order Notifications? (2026)
WhatsApp charges per message, and the price depends on the country of the phone that receives it: less than half a cent in the US, about two cents in Pakistan or the UAE. Here are the real rates, a worked monthly example, and what is never charged.
Quick answer: WhatsApp charges per delivered message, and the price is set by the country of the phone that receives it. With StaffPing, an order alert costs $0.0048 to a phone in the US or Canada, $0.0210 in Pakistan, $0.0220 in the UAE and $0.0308 in the UK. You pay that on top of a plan from $9 a month. A store with 300 orders a month that alerts two staff members sends 600 messages: about $2.88 in the US, $12.60 in Pakistan or $18.48 in the UK. Failed messages, test messages and alerts held back by shifts are never charged.
Two things you pay for
A monthly plan. $9 (Starter), $29 (Growth) or $49 (Scale), billed through Shopify after a 7-day free trial. The plan decides how many staff and branches you can alert, not how many messages you send.
Each message that reaches a phone. WhatsApp itself charges per message. The price depends on where the receiving phone is registered, not where your store is. Order alerts are what WhatsApp calls utility messages, and the rates below are for that kind.
That's the whole bill. There is no per-order fee and no message bundle to buy in advance.
Rates for common countries
Rates for order alerts, effective October 1, 2026. The full list is on the pricing page.
| Staff phone in | Per alert | Per 1,000 alerts |
|---|---|---|
| India | $0.0020 | $2.00 |
| US and Canada | $0.0048 | $4.80 |
| Egypt | $0.0050 | $5.00 |
| Brazil | $0.0095 | $9.50 |
| Mexico | $0.0119 | $11.90 |
| Saudi Arabia | $0.0150 | $15.00 |
| Pakistan | $0.0210 | $21.00 |
| United Arab Emirates | $0.0220 | $22.00 |
| Spain | $0.0280 | $28.00 |
| United Kingdom | $0.0308 | $30.80 |
| Germany | $0.0770 | $77.00 |
The spread is wide: an alert to Germany costs more than 30 times one to India. If your team is in one country, its row is your cost. If your staff are spread out, each alert is priced by its own recipient.
A worked month
Say your store gets 10 orders a day, about 300 a month, and every new order goes to two people: the packer and the person who calls the customer. That's 600 alerts.
| Team in | Messages | With the $9 plan |
|---|---|---|
| US | $2.88 | $11.88 |
| Pakistan | $12.60 | $21.60 |
| United Arab Emirates | $13.20 | $22.20 |
| United Kingdom | $18.48 | $27.48 |
Two things move this number more than the rate does:
- How many people get each order. Every recipient is a separate message. Sending each order to one branch instead of all three cuts the bill by two thirds. That's what routing rules by branch, product or order value are for.
- Which events you alert on. A ping on new orders plus another on paid orders doubles the messages for every prepaid order. Pick the event your team acts on.
Usage is billed daily through Shopify once it reaches $1, rounded up to the cent each time, so a month can come to a few cents more than the arithmetic above.
What you're never charged for
- Failed messages. Only delivered messages are billed. A wrong number or a phone that isn't on WhatsApp costs nothing.
- Alerts held back by shifts or quiet hours. If nobody on a ping is working, the alert isn't sent, so it isn't billed. It waits in Logs if you want to send it later. (If you switch on catch-up for a ping, held alerts are sent when the shift starts, and billed then.)
- Test messages. The "Send me a test" message during setup and the Send Test button on a ping are free.
- Your first 50 delivered messages. They come with the 7-day trial on every plan.
What changed on October 1, 2026
Until September 30, an order alert delivered inside WhatsApp's 24-hour window (the day after a staff member last messaged the business number) was free. Many guides still say so. Since October 1, WhatsApp charges order alerts at the normal rate whether a window is open or not. Only replies to a staff member's own message stay free inside it.
We saw it in our own numbers. One store whose staff message the StaffPing number often had 229 to 491 of its alerts delivered free every day in the last week of September. From October 1 the count was zero, while the store sent as many alerts as before.
Your bill has a ceiling
Every plan has a usage cap per billing cycle: $200 on Starter, $500 on Growth, $1,500 on Scale. Message charges never go past it, so a sudden flood of orders, or a ping set up more broadly than you meant, can't turn into an open-ended bill. The cap resets each cycle.
What it costs to build it yourself
You can send order alerts to WhatsApp without an app: Shopify Flow or Zapier for the trigger, and WhatsApp's Cloud API or a provider such as Twilio for sending. WhatsApp charges per message there too, at its own rate for each country. On top of that you need:
- a phone number registered to a WhatsApp Business account,
- message templates approved by WhatsApp before your first alert can go out,
- the provider's own per-message or monthly fees, if you use one,
- someone to fix it when a template is rejected or a step breaks.
For a team that wants alerts and nothing to maintain, that setup costs more in time than the messages do.
What this guide doesn't cover
- Rates change. WhatsApp publishes new rate cards, and the October 2026 card raised Pakistan, Peru and South Africa. The pricing page always shows the current rates.
- Summaries are messages too. A daily summary report delivered to your team is billed like an alert.
- WhatsApp groups aren't supported. Alerts go to individual numbers, and each one is a message.
StaffPing sends WhatsApp alerts to your team when Shopify orders need attention. Install it from the Shopify App Store and try it on your own phone before you choose a plan.
