Slack or WhatsApp for Shopify Order Alerts? (Ting vs Staff Ping, 2026)

An honest comparison of Ting (Slack) and Staff Ping (WhatsApp) for Shopify order alerts: who each one is actually built for, what each really costs, and where each channel wins.

Quick answer: Neither app is wrong. They are built for different teams. If your team works from a desk and lives in Slack, Ting sends order alerts straight into a channel for a flat $4.95 to $14.95 a month. If your team is on their feet, in a warehouse, a kitchen, or several branches, Staff Ping sends the same alert to a phone they already carry, on WhatsApp, with no Slack app to open. Pick the channel your team actually checks, not the app with more features.

Search "Shopify order alerts Slack or WhatsApp" and you mostly get feature lists. Nobody says the obvious thing: this is not a features question. It is a "where does your team actually work" question.

So here is the honest version, written from the WhatsApp side of the comparison, including the parts where we lose.

In this comparison

What each app actually does

Ting, Slack Notifications, built by Aero Apps, has been on the Shopify App Store since April 2019. It posts order alerts into Slack channels, supports rule-based triggers so you can filter what gets posted, and sends daily, weekly, or monthly order reports on top of the real-time alerts. It works across multiple Slack channels and teams, and it is compatible with Shopify POS. It carries a 5.0-star rating across 13 reviews.

Staff Ping sends Shopify order alerts to your team on WhatsApp instead. There is no Meta Business account or WhatsApp API setup on your end, because the alerts go out from Staff Ping's own WhatsApp number to your team's regular WhatsApp. You set rules on order total, shipping country, product tags, SKU or collection, payment gateway, payment status, or branch location, and route different alerts to different people. It has been live on the Shopify App Store since March 2026.

Same job, get someone's attention when an order needs it, on two different channels.

Slack vs WhatsApp (this is the whole point)

Slack is where a desk-based team already spends the day: support, ops managers, anyone with a laptop open and Slack pinned in a tab. An order alert landing in a channel they are already watching is nearly free attention. No new habit, no new app to check.

WhatsApp is where a not-at-a-desk team already spends the day: a warehouse picker, a kitchen line, a branch manager on the shop floor rather than in front of a monitor. Slack on a personal phone competes with everything else on that phone, if it is installed at all. WhatsApp is usually the app already open, because it is also how family, friends, and half of their other work conversations happen.

Neither of those facts is a knock on the other app. It is a genuine "who is this for" split, and it is worth being honest about which team you actually run.

Who Ting is actually right for

If your team is desk-based and Slack is already the default place work happens, a support team triaging orders, an ops manager watching order flow between meetings, a small team that lives in Slack for everything, then Ting is the right call, and you should just install it.

It is a mature app with six years of history. It is a flat monthly fee no matter how many orders you do. And it gives you daily or weekly digest reports on top of real-time alerts, which is a genuinely useful thing Staff Ping does not do at all.

Who Staff Ping is actually right for

If the person who needs the alert is on their feet, a warehouse picker, a kitchen team, a branch that preps its own orders, a fulfillment team that never sits at a desk, then Slack asks them to have it installed, logged in, and checked on a device they may not even carry for work. WhatsApp is very likely already in their hand.

For multi-branch stores in particular, routing each branch's orders to that branch's own WhatsApp numbers tends to beat a Slack channel someone has to remember to open. Staff Ping can match on the branch handling the order, either the pickup branch chosen at checkout or the location Shopify assigns when routing a delivery, so each location only ever gets its own orders.

Our honest downsides

A comparison that only flatters one side is not a comparison. Here is where Ting genuinely has the edge:

  • Pricing shape. Ting is flat: $4.95 or $14.95 a month, however many alerts you send. Staff Ping is a plan fee ($9 for 5 recipients, $19 for unlimited) plus per-message usage, because WhatsApp itself charges per message. For most stores it is small: 200 alerts a month to Mexico at $0.0119 is about $2.38. Every plan also has a usage cap ($200 or $500), so the bill can never run away. But for a very high-volume store, a flat fee is simply easier to budget, and worth running the numbers on.
  • No digests. Ting sends daily, weekly, and monthly order reports. Staff Ping sends real-time alerts and nothing else. If part of what you want is a morning summary of yesterday, we do not have it.
  • Template approval wait. Standard order alerts go out immediately. But a custom template, your language and your fields, is something we build for your store, and it has to clear WhatsApp's approval before it can send, usually within a day or two. Slack has no equivalent review step; a Slack message format is just a message format.
  • Track record. Ting has been on the App Store since 2019 with reviews to show for it. Staff Ping has been live since March 2026. That is a plainly shorter history, and it is fair to weigh it.

None of these make Ting the wrong pick for a Slack-based team. Quite the opposite. They are just true, and a merchant deciding between the two deserves to know them before installing either.

Where each fits in your stack

Some stores do not have to choose. A support or ops team can keep order visibility in Slack for triage and reporting, while the fulfillment or branch team gets a WhatsApp alert the moment an order needs to move. Different job, different channel, same order.

If your whole team already lives in Slack, install Ting and do not overthink it. If the people who need to act on an order are not sitting at a desk, that is the case WhatsApp, and Staff Ping, is built for.

Frequently asked questions

Should my Shopify store use Slack or WhatsApp for order alerts?

It depends on where your team already is. If your team works from a desk and lives in Slack all day, a Slack notification app like Ting fits into a tool they already have open. If your team is on their feet, in a warehouse, a kitchen, or multiple branches, WhatsApp reaches them without needing Slack installed on a device they may not carry for work.

What does Ting (Slack Notifications) do?

Ting sends Shopify order alerts into Slack channels, with rule-based triggers and daily, weekly, or monthly order reports. It is Slack-only, works across multiple Slack channels and teams, is compatible with Shopify POS, and has been on the App Store since April 2019 with a 5.0-star rating across 13 reviews.

How much does Ting cost?

Ting has a free Development plan, a Basic plan at $4.95 a month, and a Pro plan at $14.95 a month, each with a 7-day trial. It is a flat monthly fee regardless of how many alerts you send.

How much does Staff Ping cost compared to Ting?

Staff Ping is a monthly plan fee plus per-message usage, not a flat fee. Starter is $9 a month for 5 recipients, Pro is $19 for unlimited recipients, and every delivered WhatsApp message is billed at the rate for the recipient's country, published in full on the pricing page. A store sending 200 alerts a month to Mexico at $0.0119 pays about $2.38 in usage on top of the plan fee. Each plan also has a monthly usage cap, $200 on Starter and $500 on Pro, so the bill can never exceed it.

Does Staff Ping require a WhatsApp Business account?

No. Staff Ping sends alerts from its own WhatsApp number, so there is no Meta Business account, WhatsApp Business API access, or message template submission on your end. Your team receives the alerts on regular WhatsApp.

Can I get alerts in Slack and WhatsApp at the same time?

Not from Staff Ping, which is WhatsApp-only, the same way Ting is Slack-only. Some stores run both: Slack for the desk-based team, WhatsApp for the branch or warehouse team, each getting the alert on the channel they actually check.

Is Staff Ping compatible with Shopify POS orders?

Yes. Staff Ping triggers on Shopify's order webhooks (order created, paid, fulfilled, cancelled), so a POS order runs through the same rules as an online order. Ting also lists POS compatibility.

Does Staff Ping send daily or weekly order reports?

No. Staff Ping sends real-time alerts when an order matches a rule, and that is all it does. If you want a daily or weekly digest of order activity, Ting has that and Staff Ping does not.

Which app has more of a track record?

Ting is the more established app: live since April 2019, with a 5.0-star rating across 13 reviews. Staff Ping has been on the Shopify App Store since March 2026, so it has a much shorter public record. Weigh that against what you actually need: a longer history, or the channel your team already uses.

Do I have to choose one over the other?

No, they are not really competing for the same job. Ting keeps a desk-based team informed inside Slack. Staff Ping gets an alert in front of someone who is not sitting at a desk. The right choice depends on where your team already works, not on which app has more features.
